I recently came across an article that looked closely at the statistics of the proportion of male to female drivers among couples. The study found that in over 75% of cases the man drives when they are with a woman (such as their girlfriend or spouse) in the car. These statistics baffled me. This article outlines many of the reasons women feel contribute to why they don't drive. However, most of the reasons the women gave dealt with high heels or outfit choice ect. I find it sad that women are beginning to conform to male oppression without even noticing it. They think that it is just the males being polite. Let me know what you think about this!

Here's a link to the article: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/24/do-women-take-the-backseat-to-men/?scp=3&sq=feminism&st=cse

Some of those reasons are terrible! I mean really, a women can drive just as well as a guy can! Are you really speaking your voice when you say you want to sit around while the man does the hard work? Isn't that the whole point of this? That guys end up doing all the hard work but girls are the ones that wear high heels so they can't work.

I read the article...and I agree with Claire. Many of the comments quoted in the article are from women who say that they would rather their husband drive, because if the man isn't driving he's correcting the woman's driving. Hmmm...could there maybe be a superiority issue here? The men need to be in control of the big loud automobile. Also, "There’s no reason to do something yourself when someone else will do it for you at no price… It’s menial labour and thus precisely the sort of thing men should do (or, more precisely, that I should never even have to consider doing). Like dealing with taking out garbage." To me...this sounds like spouting rote-learned stereotypes without even thinking about what they mean. You can almost hear the male voice speaking through the female mouth...put from a man's perspective, it would sound something like, "Women are too delicate to even have to consider doing physical labor like driving cars or taking out the garbage," which is absolutely not true. Many of the comments seem to run along the lines of the idea that women should take advantage of the fact that men will do things for them...there's no reason not to, right? If we don't want to do it, why shouldn't we take advantage of the chauvinism to make them do it for us? But consider, for a moment, why we might not want to drive. Might driving be, perhaps, a male-dominated area? Are men, generally, more interested in cars than women are? Maybe we don't want to drive, because our society has taught us from the moment of our birth until now that we shouldn't want to, that we should be passive and quiet and submissive...and the words "passive" and "passenger" sound rather alike, yes?

Even though you my think that women are being oppressed by men because they are driving, you might not exactly know why they are giving it up. When my dad drives it is almost like an order from my mom to drive. My mom doesn't really like to drive so he makes my dad do it. You see this my mom is actually taking control of my father this way. Maybe that 75% of women that are being oppressed by the opposite sex might have dived by know in your mind.

o Eve by the way when my mom is driving my dad never tells my mom what to do. If he did he would have a long speech.

Good for you father, then, Keila, but the comments I read in the article tended to lean towards men driving because if they don't they yell at the woman insufferably. And, although I realize this sounds like an insane conspiracy theory a little bit, maybe your mother only wants your father to drive because the society she grew up in taught her that the man should be in control.

The high-prole bathroom reveals two contradictory impulses at one is the desire to exhibit a “hospital” standard of cleanliness, which means splashing a lot of Lysol or Pine Oil around; the other is to display as much fanciness and luxury as possible, which means a lurch in the opposite direction, toward fur toilet seat covers and towels which don’t work not merely because they are made largely of Dacron but also because a third of the remaining threads are “gold.”
